What Is UFE?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure that safely and effectively shrinks fibroids and alleviates their symptoms. Through a small incision in the groin area, the physician inserts a tiny catheter used to enter the blood vessels that feed the fibroids. Tiny particles are then sent through the catheter to effectively block the blood flow to the fibroids. These particles remain in the artery, causing the fibroids to shrink, eliminating your symptoms.
Over 90% of patients who undergo UFE experience relief and improvements to their overall quality of life. This effective approach is a safe alternative for women looking to avoid a hysterectomy to eliminate fibroids. Though interventional radiologists are the doctors who perform UFE, the procedure is recognized by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology as an effective fibroid treatment without surgery for women who do not wish to retain fertility.
