What is interventional radiology?

We are all familiar with diagnostic imaging–the various technologies like X-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound that enable doctors to see inside the body to accurately diagnose (or rule out) disease. Interventional radiology also uses diagnostic imaging, but to treat disease from inside the body. These treatments, performed with miniature instruments under the guidance of imaging, result in less pain, fewer complications, shorter recovery times and comparable or better outcomes to the surgical alternatives.

Life before PAE was not normal. I put up with UTIs and went to the restroom a lot. I heard about PAE through my urologist as an alternative option. Now, I sleep through the night and take less trips to the restroom. Overall, I have a better quality of life.

I had issues typical of older men with BPH – frequent and/or incomplete urination along with nocturnal urination. My urologist suggested PAE after several examinations and tests. My prostate was too large for another procedure to be effective. I consulted with my primary doctor and he also encouraged me to do the PAE procedure. The operation was quick and easy with a two week period of recovery. Alate was great and I would advise others to simply not wait! Dr Doe is the best in Houston!
