Ambulatory Phlebectomy: Varicose Vein Removal

For those suffering from varicose and spider veins, navigating the different treatment options can feel overwhelming. One of the most effective forms of treatment for those suffering is a phlebectomy – a minimally invasive procedure that involves the removal of problem veins through several tiny incisions made in the skin. At Alate Vein Center, our vein experts utilize the latest in medical technology for safe and successful phlebectomies and other varicose vein removals in Houston.

WHAT IS A PHLEBECTOMY?

Phlebectomies are a minimally invasive varicose vein treatment that oer patients a quick healing time and minimal discomfort. They are primarily used in cases of bulging varicose veins that lie directly beneath the skin’s surface. The procedure involves leaving small incisions near the problem vein in order to extricate the vein using a small scalpel. it is a relatively short procedure, and patients are free to leave the medical facilities the same day.

One of our vein specialists will perform a medical screening and ask you several questions about your well-being.
The clearest indication that you may be a good candidate for this procedure is the nature of your varicose veins. If they are bulging and near the surface of the skin, then a phlebectomy is probably the treatment of choice. The doctor will also ask about different vein conditions you may have experienced, including blood clots, the health of your blood vessels, and heart disease.

There is not much preparation needed for a phlebectomy, although there are a couple of precautions that should be taken.
Approximately 72 hours before the procedure, cease ingesting blood thinners such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or anti-inflammatory drugs. It is also important to keep the procedure area clean and avoid applying lotion until after the phlebectomy is complete.

Before the phlebectomy begins, you will be asked to change into a gown and lay down on a procedure table. In order to ensure complete patient comfort, we offer twilight anesthesia to help with any anxieties. Once you are comfortable, an anesthetic will be administered near the problem vein.
The doctor will then use a small scalpel to make light punctures in the skin and a small hook will be threaded through the holes. The doctor will hook the vein and carefully remove it from the body. After the vein has been taken out, bandages will be put in place. No stitches are required.

You will be asked to wear a compression stocking or support hose for 24-72 hours after the procedure. Do not engage in heavy physical activity, but be sure that you are taking light walks multiple times a day in order to avoid blood clots.
Minor pain is common, but you should be able to resume your normal activities within 48-72 hours. Results should become apparent after about two weeks.

While phlebectomies are regarded as safe procedures, there are several symptoms and risk factors to be aware of. While most of these side effects will resolve themselves in a matter of weeks, you can speak with your doctor with any concerns you may have. The post-procedure symptoms include:

  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Oozing/Bleeding
  • Skin discoloration
  • Lumps (these are generally harmless)
  • Infection
